Spring is a wonderful time of year. It's a season of opportunity, new beginnings and for getting things done. That's why everybody use spring to completely clean their homes! You surely have cleaned your home by now and you definitely must be proud of your achievement. You should! But what if I told you that cleaning your home on the surface isn't enough to be ready for summer?

That's right. You might have dusted your furniture, repainted your walls and even gotten rid of all the junk that you could find, but there's something more you should do: turn your home into an energy efficient home! That should be your last step in preparation for summer should be to check if your home is energy efficient enough to save you some bucks and some much needed energy. Here's what you should be checking!

Take a Look at Lighting We said it before and we say it again. Since spring is a time to enjoy more natural daylight, why not incorporate the use of lighting in your home and check to see how energy efficient you are being in that category? For starters, you can leave the lights off as you get later into your day. Secondly, you have the opportunity to replace older bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. Moreover, take a look at your outdoor patio lights. Why not go solar?

Watch Your Water Usage Now that cold winter weather is no longer with you, why not take shorter showers? We all know how good it feels to linger and soak in that hot shower. Moreover, you can reduce the temperature of your hot water heater to save energy that is necessary to heat up that water. Additionally, make certain to incorporate water usage from rain by storing it in rain barrels to water outdoor plants.

Save Electricity How about trying out line drying certain pieces of clothing rather than dry cleaning with chemicals or running your dryer? You will love the fresh scent that is left behind. You can also turn off the television and unplug from all other devices as you take your time and head outside for outdoor activities. Believe it or not, stand by mode also uses a lot of energy, so make sure you only leave plugged in the absolutely necessary appliances before you go out.

Start up the Grill Now that nicer weather is here, why not experiment with cooking on your grill a bit more? If you have only done burgers and hot dogs, you should definitely try a piece of salmon or some grilled vegetables on your grill top. You'll love the change! Besides, you will save gas and/or electric from your oven and range top.

Window Curtains By changing the window curtains from heavy to lighter materials you allow in more natural sunlight. This will allow you to lower the thermostat and save on energy, as well. Also, by incorporating shades into your window designs, you get the opportunity to keep that sun out when it gets too hot and have the ability to keep your central or in-the-wall air conditioning units off more than on during summer months.

These are just some easy common sense ways to approach spring for saving energy throughout your home both indoors and outdoors this spring. There are lots of other tips out there, so be sure to check them out!
